There has been no significant mutation of the novel coronavirus so far based on the data collected from full gene sequences of 104 virus strains, which showed 99 percent homogeneity, Liang Wannian, head of the expert group on the novel coronavirus outbreak response and disposal at China's National Health Commission, said at the press conference.
"The only successful measure we have seen so far to contain COVID-19 is here in China," said Bruce Aylward, head of World Health Organization (WHO) Experts Team at the conference.
The expert said he used to hold a biased and ambivalent attitude towards non-pharmaceutical interventions against the disease, adding that although there's no drug and vaccine to protect against the disease, China has been using what is available to save lives.
He also stressed Chinese people’s sense of responsibility for protecting the world from the disease. "China was the first line of defense to try to prevent the international spread of this virus," said Aylward.
"It's only seven weeks since a completely new disease was described. We have diagnostics, we’re trying anti-virus therapy. Probably within months, we’re trying vaccines," said Aylward, "We've gained a bit of time. But we have to use that time better than we are today."
When referring to a global response to the disease, he said: "We have long lists of research projects and studies, but we got to prioritize those things that could get the knowledge we need to stop this fast and tools we need to reduce morbidity and mortality."
Twenty-five years ago, I visited Wuhan to assess the capacity to eradicate, it was at that time another virus, a dangerous virus. The Wuhan I found was a fair bit smaller than today, but it was a bustling, energetic, lively place filled with wonderful people with a great spirit as it went about trying to eradicate the disease I was working on at the time.
But when Doctor Liang and I arrived in Wuhan two nights ago, it was a very different place. The city of skyscrapers, giant autoroutes and a gorgeous hypermodern train station was silent. It was a ghost town.
And behind every window of these skyscrapers we drove past, there were people. There were 15 million people who were staying put in one place for weeks at a time to stop this disease.
And we spoke with people we were working with in Wuhan, they said, “This is our duty. We have to protect the world from this disease. This is our role. We are playing our role.”
And I just thought it's so important that we recognize that to the people of Wuhan, it is recognized, the world is in your debt. And when this disease finishes, hopefully, we will have a chance to thank the people in Wuhan for the role that they played in it, because many of us, many of the people here have suffered but the people of that city have gone through an extraordinary period and are still going through it.
And it is so important that the world understand it at this point. Because every day, we stop to think about this disease, make decision should we do it or we not, this virus will take advantage and almost double the number of cases. We have to move fast.
First, all countries must prioritize protecting health workers.
Second, we must engage communities to protect people who are most at risk of severe disease, particularly the elderly and people with underlying health conditions.
And third, we must protect countries that are the most vulnerable, by doing our utmost to contain epidemics in countries with the capacity to do it.
